Writing Fabric : A Bibliography of Women's Contributions to Decorative Textile Culture, 1870-1920
This bibliography surveys late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century women’s writing on the production and use of decorative textiles. It gathers a wide variety of publications – including interior design guides, handicraft manuals, textile histories, primers, dictionaries and exhibition catalogues – which appeared in Britain, Ireland and the United States from the 1870s through the 1910s. The bibliography foregrounds treatises on handmade textiles, including historical handicrafts such as embroidery and lacemaking, and it puts particular emphasis on the materiality of fabrics and their use in the home. The list of sources is intended to provide a point of departure for researchers, students and anyone interested in women’s writing, textile crafts and the history of domestic cultures. At the time of publication in 2024, all listed sources can be retrieved via digital libraries and databases such as HathiTrust Digital Library, The Clark Art Institute Digital Collections, Internet Archive and Project Gutenberg.
