On the influence of fluid dynamics and elastic deformations on pressure buildup in partially filled gaps

The transition range from boundary to mixed lubrication is characterized by processes with complex interactions between solid bodies and a fluid that does not completely fill the gap. The associated friction and wear behavior exhibits manifold phenomena in the Neo-Stribeck-curve that are not yet well understood. The authors’ research focusses on fundamental investigations of this tribological regime. This paper presents recent studies on models concerning the pressure buildup in partially filled gaps, and illustrates the importance of the mathematical technique used towards incorporating the fluid dynamics into the calculations. The model is extended to include elastic deformations. Fundamental studies reveal the relevance of these deformations in combination with the filling ratio, with regard to their effect on the pressure distribution.
