The overall economic impact of MEMS still remains high. Also in the future they will play a major role in daily life. Thereby, the requirements are varying. Especially the functional density and the MEMS diversification will be dominant factors of influence prospectively. Furthermore the production output will increase due to the manifold fields of application as well as the miniaturization. A hybrid MEMS integration is one approach fulfilling market requirements. However, for hybrid MEMS a suitable mounting and testing technique is coercively necessary. Isolated mounting and testing applications are predominating this market presently, analyzing state of the art solutions. Holistic systems especially for MEMS do not exist. Against this background in the presented work, a flexible desktop factory for mounting and testing of MEMS was developed. Thereby the main goals were reducing test and mounting costs on one hand and increasing the degree of automation for MEMS production on the other. The system development was structured as follows. In a first step important requirements within the context of the desktop factory were identified and the system was divided in subsystems. In addition, a micro synchronous motor consisting of a stator and a rotor was defined as a demonstrator. The subsystems are: the positioning system, the machine control, the machine vision system, the tool changer with test and mounting tools and the control software. Subsequently the subsystems were configured and merged on a vibration-cushioned platform made of granite. To ensure the usability with different MEMS, materials and surfaces, the development was focused on flexibility and compatibility. Moreover several studies were made verifying the functionality of the desktop factory regarding the verbalized requirements. This includes inter alia the measurement of geometric quantities, the identification of features with the machine vision system, the execution of reliability tests and the determination of fabrication tolerances. Finally, by means of mounting and testing the demonstrator, a complete process chain consisting of different mounting and testing steps was presented. At this juncture the significant tasks were finding matching stator / rotor pairs, the mounting of rotors and stators and the final function test by electric conduction. As a result the functionality of the desktop factory could be demonstrated.
