Mitigation techniques of seismic hazard effects on art objects

In this thesis the problem of preservation of art objects from seismic hazard is dealt with, in particular by defining the seismic demand, the seismic capacity and finally by proposing an adequate methodology for mitigation intervention. Amongst seismic mitigation techniques, seismic isolation, and in particular the use of friction isolator devices, is considered as an effective retrofitting strategy for art objects. Specific tools are developed for optimizing the design phase of the isolation characteristics for Double Concave Curved Surface Sliders (DCCSS), also with the help of numerical simulations. Finally, the entire proposed methodology is applied to a case study concerning the study and design of a seismic isolated base for the Bust of Francesco I D'Este, a sculpture carved by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century, and housed at the Palazzo dei Musei in Modena (Italy).

Die vorliegende Dissertation befasst sich mit dem Problem der Erhaltung von Kunstobjekten in seismisch aktiven Ländern. Hierbei werden insbesondere die Definition der Erdbebenbeanspruchung und die Beschreibung der seismischen Kapazität der jeweiligen Kunstgegenstände betrachtet. Darauf aufbauend werden entsprechende Methoden zur Begrenzung von Erdbebenschäden vorgeschlagen. Innerhalb dieser Methoden wird insbesondere die seismische Isolierung mithilfe von Reibungsisolatoren als eine der wirkungsvollsten Strategien für Kunstobjekte betrachtet. Mit Hilfe numerischer Simulationen werden spezifische Analyse- und Bemessungshilfsmittel zur Optimierung der Isolationseigenschaften der "Double Concave Curved Surface Sliders (DCLss)" entwickelt. Abschliessend wird die vorgeschlagene Methodik in einer Fallstudie angewendet, welche die Planung und Auslegung eines seismisch isolierten Sockels für die Büste von Francesco I d'Este einbezieht. Die Skulptur wurde im 17. Jahrhundert von Gian Lorenzo Bernini angefertigt und befindet sich im Palazzo dei Musei in Modena (Italien).
