Anhand der Biographie des Gymnasial- und Hochschullehrers August Heinrich Christian Gelpke (1769-1842) werden folgende Aspekte untersucht: Seine Auseinandersetzung mit der rasanten Entwicklung in den Naturwissenschaften, insbesonders in der Astronomie, um die Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert. Sein beruflicher Werdegang ist ein Beispiel fuer die Bildungsideale und das Bildungssystem des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Tätigkeit wird dargestellt im Rahmen der Popularisierung der Naturwissenschaften um 1800. Gelpkes Wirken liefert einen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig, des Vorläufers (gegründet 1745) der heutigen Technischen Universität. Eine während der Recherchen für diese Arbeit aufgefundene detaillierte Nachschrift Gelpkes einer von ihm gehörten Mechanik-Vorlesung bei Prof. Beireis (Universität Helmstedt) im Sommersemester 1792 erwies sich als von besonderem Interesse, da sie mit ihren fast 200 Seiten Umfang jede Einzelheit dieser Vorlesung festhält.

On the basis of the biography of August Heinrich Christian Gelpke (1769-1842), a high school teacher and professor at an intermediate institution between high school and university, the following aspects are examined: His conflict with the rapid development in the natural sciences, especially astronomy, around the turn of the 18th to the 19th century. His career as an example for educational ideals and for the educational system of the early 19th century. His main activity is described within the framework of the popularization of natural sciences around 1800. Gelpkes activity contributes to the history of the Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig, the predecessor (founded 1745) of todays Technical University. A detailed transcript by Gelpke of a course on mechanics by Prof. Beireis (University of Helmstedt) in the summer term of 1792 was found during the investigations for this work. It proved to be of special interest because, with its almost 200 pages, it records every detail of this course.
