In this work the ionisation state and the magnetic topology of 57 coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed in interplanetary space by the Ulysses spacecraft are investigated. The analysis is based on plasma and magnetic field data of the SWICS instrument (Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer) and the VHM instrument (Vector Helium Magnetometer) on board the spacecraft. It was found that the ionisation states of heavy ions in CMEs with the topology of a magnetic cloud are shifted towards higher charge states as compared to the ambient solar wind. CMEs that do not exhibit magnetic cloud structure have the same ionisation state as the adjacent solar wind. The evolution of the ionisation states from the sun to the spacecraft is investigated by means of the numerical solution of the ionisation/recombination equations for oxygen and silicon. On the basis of the freezing-in concept conclusions about the physical conditions in the source regions of the CMEs are drawn.
